Sex is part of the human experience and interwoven into our wellness. Gaining insight into our sexual experiences deepens our understanding of ourselves.

What is systemic sex therapy?

Systemic sex therapy is beneficial because it looks at sexual issues within the larger context of clients' relationships, cultural backgrounds, family systems, and personal histories. Rather than isolating sexual concerns as individual problems, systemic sex therapy views them as interconnected with other aspects of clients' lives. This approach helps clients understand how factors like communication styles, relationship dynamics, family beliefs, and cultural expectations all play a role in their sexual experiences and challenges. As a result, clients gain a deeper, more holistic understanding of their sexuality, fostering healthier relationships and personal growth.

Systemic sex therapy’s holistic, inclusive, and relational focus makes it an effective approach for helping clients achieve greater intimacy, self-awareness, and satisfaction in their relationships.

Comprehensive Approach:

Systemic sex therapy explores how relationships, family history, and cultural beliefs impact sexual behavior and intimacy, giving clients a deeper understanding of their issues within a broader context.

Improved Communication:

It encourages open, honest discussions about sexual needs, desires, and boundaries, helping clients and their partners build trust and foster connection.

Resolution of Underlying Issues:

Systemic therapy examines relational and emotional patterns that may contribute to sexual concerns, allowing clients to address root causes and create long-term change.

Flexibility and Inclusivity:

This approach adapts to clients’ diverse backgrounds, relational structures, and orientations, making it inclusive and sensitive to individual needs.

Self-Discovery and Growth:

Clients gain insight into how past relationships, cultural norms, and personal experiences shape their sexuality, empowering them to challenge limiting beliefs and embrace healthier patterns.

Examples of Approach

  • As a systemic thinker, I consider the various factors that may contribute to low libido—such as relationship dynamics, cultural or religious influences, or anxiety. These elements may be sustaining the issue. Desire and arousal are not always spontaneous; they can be responsive, much like emotions. Just as we feel sad when something is sad, we can experience a sexual response when something feels sensual. Together, we’ll explore the “gas pedals” and “brake pedals” that contribute to a satisfying sexual experience for you.

  • In long-term relationships, it's common for partners to experience differences in sexual desire and arousal. Sometimes, partners unintentionally respond in ways that reinforce this misalignment. By applying attachment theory and examining relational patterns, we can uncover the factors contributing to this impasse and identify ways to co-regulate within the pattern to create positive change.

  • This is often labeled as "sex addiction," though I don’t agree with that term. Individuals experiencing Compulsive Sexual Behavior (CSB) may feel a strong urge to engage in specific sexual behaviors as a way to escape stressful situations or manage uncomfortable emotions. Using systems theory, I would examine the origins of these coping behaviors in your personal history and work with you to develop mindfulness-based coping tools that can serve as alternatives to CSB.

  • I avoid terms like "disorder" or "dysfunction," as they can feel pathologizing. Instead, we’ll work together to explore the factors contributing to this bodily response—such as relationship dynamics, performance anxiety, or cultural influences. We’ll identify the emotional triggers and patterns involved in your experience, and I’ll guide you through mindfulness techniques to foster positive change.

  • This condition is commonly known as premature ejaculation, but some clients prefer not to use that term. By applying systems theory, we can take a holistic approach to understanding and addressing rapid climax. It’s important to consider whether health issues, anxious thoughts, or family history may be contributing to this challenge. I will offer behavioral and mindfulness techniques to facilitate positive change.

  • Systems theory aims to empower individuals by helping them understand how their trauma responses are interconnected with other parts of their lives. This self-awareness can empower clients to make meaningful changes, foster resilience, and regain a sense of agency. I help clients address unresolved feelings, beliefs, and coping mechanisms that originated in childhood and may still be impacting their present-day experiences and relationships. We’ll practice mindfulness exercises to safely uncover and heal past experiences. We’ll explore the red lights and green lights to your personal sexual satisfaction and safety.

Rates

The fee for a 60 minute session is $250. I am open to discussing a sliding scale in certain cases.

Insurance

I am currently on the panel for several insurance in New York: Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare and GHI. There could be plans under these insurances that may limit coverage. You can contact your insurance company to verify your benefits.

I am not on any insurance panels for Pennsylvania.

For all out-of-network services I can provide a superbill which you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. Reimbursement rates are based on your specific insurance plan. Contact your insurance company to verify your out-of-network benefits.

Medicare

I am opted-out of Medicare. While Medicare offers valuable access to care for many individuals, the constraints and financial implications of participating made opting out a more feasible choice for my practice to focus on personalized, flexible, and specialized care.

Cancellation

I understand that unplanned issues come up and I will gladly reschedule an appointment if notified 24 hours before your scheduled session. Cancellations made after the 24 hour cut off, or no shows, will be charged a $75 fee.
